Integrated Advisory display I created to advertise the “scary” items at our library. |
Promoting Horror at the Library
I always found catchy displays to be the best way to promote our horror books at the library. Since I love anything and everything horror, I always found these displays to be the most fun. I think if you have fun making a display, its more likely to be a hit in the library. My “scary” displays were always the most popular at the library and the books/DVD’s/audiobooks would be flying off them! I created the display pictured and received a lot of compliments on it. I think the CAUTION tape and the blood caught a lot of patrons’ attention, and made the display stand out more than some of the others that we had.

Actual post I created to advertise my Horror Movie Night at the library. |
We had a great turnout at this event and everyone said that they enjoyed it and were hopeful for another, so I believe this would be a successful program for other library’s as well!
I think displays are great ways to get a patron to take a few extra moments to look at something. I really love the blood dripping in your display! Great job. When I was doing my secret shopper at a library they had a Harry Potter display on the way in the library. I was there for about a half hour and on the way out the display was gone! It seemed perfect for a display about a wizard to just disappear! Talk about perfect timing for when they took the display down!
ReplyDeleteI really love the movie night idea. Do you have a specific place to show movies or did you project it on a wall somewhere? I think this is a great way to incorporate lots of genres of books!
Hi Meredith! That sounds like a great display. I just love fun and interesting displays!!
DeleteWe have a giant projector screen in the lower level of my library, so I projected the Chucky DVD on that - what’s better than watching a psychotic/possessed serial killer doll on a giant screen in an empty library basement?! NOTHING.
Hi Rebecca! I love your Child's Play poster! It is intriguing and eye catching but yet it is simple! If I saw this hanging in my local library I would be super excited to go! I like your Scared to death display as well. It did make me think more of a murder mystery display than a truly horror display but regardless it is eye popping and very creative!!
ReplyDeleteI thought it was perfect for scary books at the time, but couldn’t decide if I should add it to this post or not given the fact that I’ve learned its more murder/mystery than true horror. BUT, at the time I added mostly horror books to the display, and those were getting picked up and checked out - so I think it was a good display, regardless. The blood and caution tape caught their eye, but the books and dvd’s caught their interest!
DeleteI love that you included pictures of your own displays at work. I am SUPER jealous of your Brew and View event. How on earth did you convince your board to let you have alcohol at the library. Great ideas and full points!
ReplyDeleteWe actually have alcohol programs at the library fairly often! Monthly beer brewing group, wine tastings, and then I sometimes do wine bottle painting programs that I serve wine at. This is the only library I’ve ever worked at, so I assumed it was normal!? All I need to do is get an alcohol permit and we’re good to go!
