Reading Profile

My (very limited) free time these days is spent reading.  I tend to gravitate towards the thriller genre, but I’ve been trying to break that habit and branch out into other genres.  I just find thrillers to be so much fun, quick, and easy reads, and with toddler at home I need these kinds of reads!  However I do have to mention I just read an amazing science fiction book called Dark Matter by Blake Crouch that I think everyone should try right now.

Harlan Coben
My all-time favorite author is a man named Harlan Coben. His books can be categorized as suspense/thriller and they are always so much fun to read. I’ve read every adult book he has written (he also has a young adult series that I haven’t read... yet) and he currently has two shows on Netflix that he produced, and I binge watched almost immediately. I am just completely obsessed with him and all of his works.

I attend a monthly book club with a large group of women who have completely different interests, where I am introduced to books I normally wouldn’t pick out myself.  Some of these books I have to force down, which is very different from how I normally read.  If a book outside of Book Club doesn’t catch my interest within the first few chapters, I put it down and don’t pick it back up.  There are way too many good books in the world to waste time on ones that don’t capture your interest - or at least that is how I feel about it.

The book genres I’ve chosen for this class are:
Week 3 - Thrillers
Week 6 - Horror (also love that Horror and Romance are grouped together this week - but I digress)
Week 8 - Womens Live’s & Relationships
Week 12 - Non-Fiction
Week 13 - Young Adult

  1. Hello,
I agree with you about books that don't capture your interest. I used to feel guilty if I didn't finish a book, but you are right, life is too short to force yourself to read something you don't like! I tend to read either 50 or 100 pages (depending on how long the book is) and if the book doesn't grab me by then it's probably not going to happen

    1. Yes!!! I know so many people who refuse to stop reading books they don’t like because they feel like they have to... but why!? :)

    2. *raises hand guiltily* I always finish books, even if I have to hate read them. I can't break myself of it!!

  2. Hi,
Ya'll are right! Maybe they feel that it's either them or the book, and they have to conquer it?
As I've gotten older and more time-constrained, I tend to stay in my comfort zone of historical mysteries. I wish that I had read your blog before I chose my selection for the thriller genre. With the exception of a few authors, this is unknown territory for me. I chose Gayle Lynds' Masquerade because she was recommended to me. We'll see!

    1. I haven’t read that one... I just looked it up and it reminds me a lot of the Bourne Identity trilogy. I can’t wait to read your annotations and find out what you think!

  3. I am going to check out Harlan Coben! I looked him up on Amazon and his books look like my type! I really love to read books in a series so I am excited to start on his after this class.

There are a handful of books I have put down over the years... there was a layer of guilt at first... the author took the time to write it, I picked it up, so I should at least give the author the respect to finish it. Then one day I realized... the author will NEVER KNOW! lol So, that relieved me from my guilt so I moved on.

I have the series Safe in my netflix queue... I will watch that next! I LOVE Michael C. Hall (loved Dexter!) so I am curious to see him in this series. I also loved him in Six Feet Under that was on HBO. I am excited I have a new author to try!

    1. You’ll have to tell me what you think when you read. He has a character in his Myron Bolitar series called Win who I’m obsessed with. He’s my favorite character in any book I’ve ever read - he’s Myron’s (the lead) sidekick. Not a huge character but he’s so great.

I loved Dexter as well. Hated the last season - mostly just the finale, but loved the series as a whole. I really enjoyed Safe. He also has another show called The Five (I believe that’s what it’s called...) that was good too, but I liked Safe better.

  4. Hello Rebecca,

Dark Matter sounds really interesting. I have added it to my ever growing to-read list. Another book that you might enjoy is Leviathan Wakes by James S. A. Corey. It is a bit more fast paced then a lot of other science fiction that I have read, though I would like to warn you it is a bit long and part of a series so be careful. Are there any other genres you have been branching out to lately? I also use book clubs as a way to broaden my reading horizons though I am more stubborn when it comes to putting down books. I agree that there are so many good books out there but this one might get good, right?

    1. It might get good, I agree, but I’d rather enjoy the whole book rather than just the second half. And most of the times I struggle with a book and finish it (for book clubs, for instance) I don’t ever end up loving it. But that’s just me!!!

I will look into the Leviathan Wakes series... as long as its fast paced and captivating I’ll probably be able to finish it :)

  5. Excellent reading profile! Full points! I will admit... I've never read a Harlan Coben book! Not one! My library has every book he's ever written and I always see them go out, I just haven't gotten around to him yet!
